Masking with the Motion Sensor 360 - Plaster In
Our game changing Motion Sensor 360 - Plaster In gives custom installers one of the most discreet automation sensors available anywhere on the market. This completely flush, ultra discreet PIR with paintable front disk creates an almost invisible sensor when installed. Alongside the impossibly discreet form factor, we have developed a masking solution for the sensor to allow custom installers to fine tune the detection area. Better yet, this masking solution does not visibly change the finished aesthetic of the sensor as it is applied behind the front sensor cover.
Practically speaking, the masking sticker set gives the installer more flexibility in where the sensor can be located as the masking can be applied to block unwanted areas of the detection area. For example, we could install the sensor in the centre of a small bathroom, meaning the fitting aligns well with lights and other ceiling devices. To avoid the sensor detecting people walking past the bathroom in the hallway we could apply a carefully placed infrared blocking sticker to the sensor to avoid unwanted hallway detection.
Let’s take a more detailed look at the masking solution provided with the Motion Sensor 360 - Plaster In and how we go about fitting the infrared blocking stickers to the device.
Supplied in the box, you will find a small envelope. Inside the envelope you will find the small rectangular masking sticker set. On this sticker set you will find 7 smaller stickers. We have used ultra thin, infrared blocking material to create these stickers in various shapes to provide multiple blocking patterns.
The 7 stickers available in the set are:
1) Half blocking
2) Quarter blocking (left)
3) Quarter blocking (right)
4) Long blocking strip x 2
5) Short blocking strip x 2
We have designed the half blocking sticker and the quarter blocking stickers so they can be aligned with the sensor front and precisely block unwanted PIR beams. Please note, the exact detection areas will depend on how accurately these stickers are applied so please take care when applying the stickers.
Below we show expected detection areas for the half blocking sticker. You will note that part of the detection range we expect to be completely blocked (0% sensitivity) but there is a small area where we might see some detection (50% sensitivity). The remaining area (100% sensitivity) we can expect the sensor to detect as usual.
You will note we have only supplied the half and quarter blocking stickers for the left side of the sensor, this is so we avoid placing the blocking stickers on the side where the brightness sensor is located on the device. The brightness sensor is on the same side of the device as the notch detail that is circled below.
As well as the half blocking and quarter blocking stickers, you will find 4 thinner blocking strips, two shorter and two longer strips. These are intended to trim the edges of detection areas slightly, or by using 2 to create a thin detection channel. As these can be freely placed on the sensor, we do not provide detection area diagrams, installers should use best judgement to apply these as well as ensuring the detection zones are tested and fine tuned on site.
The longer strips are intended to be fitted along the Y axis, and the shorter strips along the X axis as shown in the various illustrations below.
Please note - when using 2 strips the brightness sensor readings may be negatively impacted due to the infrared blocking stickers being located over the brightness sensor.
Fitting the Masking
To fit the Infrared blocking stickers we first remove the lens cover from the sensor. To do this, carefully place a blade down the edge of the lens cover and prize the cover off the sensor. We now have access to the front of the sensor lens and can accurately apply the selected infrared blocking sticker to the front of the sensor.
It is also worth noting we have supplied a white and black lens cover with the product. The black lens cover can be used for darker installation locations to further minimise aesthetic impact.
Once the masking stickers have been applied, re-install the lens cover by placing the flaps on one side of the cover into place, before gently squeezing the cover so the flaps on the opposite side can slot into place.
The sensor can now be placed back into the mounting plate, the front disk installed and the installation is complete.
